Following a youth community forum held in March 2016, the Telethon Kids Institute established the Youth Advisory Group to ensure that the research conducted about young people were influenced by young people.
The aims of the Youth Advisory Group are to:
Help identify research priorities for young people – initially in the areas identified at the Youth Forum (mental health, diet and exercise, sexual health)
Provide feedback and input into research undertaken at the Institute including how to make research relevant to young people
Have input into planning events for young people
23 successful applicants consisting of 17 females and 6 males aged between 15 and 24 years old met at the very first Youth Advisory Group meeting held at the Telethon Kids Institute on the evening of 7th December, 2016.
The topics of discussion and summaries are listed below:
Format of the meetings: The general consensus was to continue with a workshop style meeting with small groups
How the members would stay connected with each other, Telethon Kids Institute and the Consumer and Community Health Research Network:
Everyone agreed that a Youth Advisory Group Facebook page should be established where future meetings and availability could be organised
Summaries of future meetings should be emailed prior to the meeting
How did members want to find out about research at Telethon Kids Institute?
Short presentations from researchers, followed by 5-min question and answer where researchers would move from group to group (i.e. “Speed dating” style)
What tasks would members like to be involved in?
Members were happy to take part in anything! This included tasks such as:
Making important decisions and directing how and what researchers should research
Youth ambassadors/advocates for Telethon Kids Institute (sharing and promoting research)
Informing researchers about potential new issues
Helping to identify gaps between child and adult services
Being involved in the grant application process
Potential collaboration with youth services
In 2017, a Youth Advisory Group Facebook page was established as the main communications channel between the Telethon Kids Institute and the members of the Youth Advisory Group. The first task in this group was establishing key dates for future meetings, with the next meeting due early April. The first meeting for 2017 will involve Telethon Kids Institute researchers from specialised fields (such as mental health, drugs and alcohol, and education) who will present 5-minute presentations to the Youth Advisory Group followed by a question and answer section.
